Job Description:

As a Research Associate at Lakehead University under the supervision of Dr. Jian Deng in the Department of Civil Engineering at Lakehead University, you will be a key member of a dynamic research team exploring landslides, risk evaluation and mitigation in northwestern Ontario. This position is ideally suited to a highly motivated candidate who has a background in engineering reliability and risk analysis and design. The research program is focused on developing novel methods in probabilistic reliability, resilience, and risk of geotechnical engineering with applications in geotechnical slope engineering.

The Research Associate will focus specifically on (1) conducting in-situ soil exploration, sampling, laboratory testing, and quantile modelling; (2) developing novel methods, algorithms, and techniques in geotechnical reliability and risk based on entropy, quantile, machine learning, and resilience; (3) investigating the failure mechanism of landslides due to deforestation, freeze and thaw cycles, and climate change; (4) producing top-quality conference and journal publications in collaboration with other project members.

Qualifications:

Candidate must have completed or be in the process of completing a PhD in a related field (e.g., Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, etc.). Experience in field & laboratory soil testing is an asset, but not a requirement. Candidate must be legally eligible to work in Canada. Once hired, the candidate must reside in the Northern Ontario community in which they are employed.

Position 2: Postdoctoral fellow

One full-time postdoctoral fellow position in the area of geotechnical reliability analysis and design, entropy theory, and quantile-based reliability and risk is available immediately (March 2022) until filled in the Department of Civil Engineering at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada (https://jdeng2.lakeheadu.ca/). Applicants must have a PhD in Civil Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, and a track record of peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Jian Deng is currently an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Lakehead University, Canada, and an adjunct professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He is an invited researcher in the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration of Canada. Dr. Deng is a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario and has over 20 years’ research, education, and industry experience. His main research interests are in the theory and applications of dynamic stability (buckling) of structures and reliability of structures in Civil, Geotechnical, and Mining Engineering.
